How did you come to work with Wit?
WELL. Deep in 2020 lockdown I saw an ad on a Facebook group advertising for a job running their drama program ‘Wit Kids’. I applied for the job and after a couple of Zoom interviews I got it! Part of that job offer was an opportunity to join the company, which was a bonus for me!!
How do you balance running Wit Kids and your own creative pursuits?
It’s tough!! I struggled at the beginning. But I’ve gotten better at managing my time and I actually think teaching drama helps me with acting. It can be hard sometimes when you aren’t getting jobs and you lose faith in yourself a bit. But then I go into class and the kids are so full of joy. It reminds me to prioritise fun in my own life and giggle at things more.
What does making theatre mean to you?
Offt. It’s my life. It just is. Working with other people to build a story and figure out how to tell it is my favourite thing to do in the world. I love what I do. I wouldn’t change it for anything.
What kind of theatre do you want to see more of this year?
I always want to see more queer stuff. I go to see any queer theatre I can find. I am also obsessed with adding dance into plays, using movement to take a story even further. I also want to see some good, edgy musical theatre, not the same shows cycled over and over again.
Who inspires you?
Oh gosh. Everyone inspires me. I think I’m inspired by seeing my friends attitudes to creating work. Lansy, for example, has just written her own show, which is going to tour Melbourne later this year. I think that’s inspiring as fuck. I learn from my friends every day.
